Signage

I am a fan of interesting or unusual signs. Here is one from our elevator.

I puzzled over the icon in the upper right, not sure what it was prohibiting. I think I figured it out but I’m not sure. I encourage readers to give their opinion on the comments.
The lower right icon: I think I know what it is. They say that about all elevators although normally before you get on.

  1. The upper right hand icon is “no unaccompanied children.” The lower right icon is, I think, “do not use in case of fire,” though I would have depicted “fire” in a different way. In America don’t we depict “fire” in a more vertical manner — three upward facing flames with the middle one bigger?

  2. The upper right hand icon reminds me of China’s 1979 no more than one child per family restriction. (Now apparently they are allowed to have up to three.)

I go with Ella on the icon below. Definitely no farting! Possibly horizontal flames, but in a structure with an elevator that’s not likely to happen.

  3. They decided to just go with “8 max” rather than try to come up with a graphic, maybe eight people and a red line through the ninth one? Eight people in that elevator is pretty optimistic. The adult and child is there just to establish the size of a child. Then the graphic shows two elevator states: an adult and child and another with just a child. I’m going with fire for the lower right although the flames are weird. Again the graphic shows two locals: the fire somewhere else and an adult who should not be in the elevator. This all shows the problems with icons. Another issue is that fire and overloading are major problems but kids fooling around in the elevator seems like a minor irritation.

  4. Many Austrian elevators have signs in German (and sometimes in English) that say “no unaccompanied children.”

I’ve seen similar signs in the United States, usually “under 12.”

In Europe, probably a mandated safety regulation.
