On the Wall
The wall around Lucca is completely preserved. The top of the wall has been made into a wide walking and biking path. It is well used by both locals and tourists but not too crowded. It is 2.6 miles around. Here is a view from one spot.
We ran into a medieval reenactment group while walking around the wall and then saw it later with a drum corps walking around town,

It Goes Both Ways
The VF connects to the Camino to Santiago. In fact, they split at Pavia, where we began. Some people go from Rome to Santiago. A few days ago, we passed two guys going the opposite direction as us, who were doing just that. They said it would take several months. We found out they were walking to Santiago when Wynette asked, as a joke, “To Santiago?” We were amazed when they said “yes”. They were 15 or 20 years younger than us. Looked strong.
