All cod, all the time

Salted cod is important in Basque culture and in the rest of Spain too. This store only sells cod. This fixation on cod began 1000 years ago when Basque fishermen found cod off Canada in the North Atlantic. We find this love for cod to be strange when there is so much fresh local fish available whereas cod is neither local nor fresh.

  1. Miscellaneous comments:
    1. Did you know there’s a book about Cod, called, of course, “Cod.” The same author wrote one about salt (called “Salt,” I love his literal thinking), which was fascinating.
    2. I don’t understand the suspension ferry–wouldn’t it have been easier to just build a ferry boat. Confusion reigns.
    3. I disagree about Charlie’s art vs. exterior comment. The Louvre is nothing from the outside, the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam is not what people go see, the Getty in LA, … Frank Gehry pieces are so exceptional, I think he breaks any rules.
    4. I love the ocean scenes, keep ’em coming!

    1. I’m not sure why they don’t use a boat either. Maybe this can be kept smaller and still take a few cars at a time back and forth and allow room for big ships? Wynette

    2. I read the book about cod. That is where I got the theory that the Basques were fishing cod off North America around 1000. Not sure if this is generally accepted or not.

    3. About art museums. I was talking about return on investment for the city. I’ll bet the Guggenheim has increased tourism in San Sebastián by by 50-100%. One old master for $100 million plus in a nondescript building might add 0.1%.
