The Not-So-Pristine Camino: Bilbao to Portugalete, Thursday, April 19

Post by Wynette: We walked 5.1 miles today. There were 3 choices of how to go and we chose the flat 8.6 mile route along the river. Sounded bucolic but turns out it was through the warehouse district and just a sidewalk along a fairly busy highway. We knew some of it would be like that so we took the metro the first 3.5 miles, but it was much the same all the way. (Bilbao has an amazing public transportation system. Very fast, clean, and modern.)

We ran into three French pilgrims, leaving us behind in above photo, who we had met two days ago on walk into Gernika. We are always amazed when we run into pilgrims we have met before on previous days. This has happened to us so far three times on this trip. Especially amazing when you think that we’ve only seen about six pilgrims a day on average and probably only talked to about half of them.
