Pendueles to Llanes, Saturday, May 5

Post by Wynette: We walked 9.7 miles today. Lots of steep up and down. I’m pretty beat. After we got here we had lunch down the street, then rested a bit, and then walked around Llanes, a very pretty little seaside town.

We really enjoyed lunch. Photo shows first course dishes (1) ensalada mixta and (2) black beans and rice with sausages. The waiter said the beans and rice is a typical Asturian dish and people say the rice and beans represent the Christians and the Moors (two important cultures in Spanish history) .

We have a great hotel room. When we checked in we told them that we are seriously considering staying two nights but were not sure. We think that is why we have such a nice room. A suite actually. All for 55 euros. But … there’s gotta be a but … the internet is roto. Broken. They aren’t sure when it will be fixed. Tomorrow is Sunday so we are not hopeful. Can we go two days without wifi? The main problem is uploading our photos. But right now, we think we’ll stay here another day and try to find a bar we can hang out in that has good wifi for our photos. Actually, it’s been several days since we’ve had remotely decent wifi so we are not optimistic we’ll find anything. In the meantime we can use our phone data for simple blog posts (with not too many photos) and email. I think we’ll survive.

Unquera to Pendueles, Friday, May 4

Post by Wynette: We crossed into Asturias today. So far we are impressed. It has been beautiful and charming. We walked 8.1 miles in perfect weather: sunny and cool. The Camino took us along a headland with lots of gorse (yellow flowers in photo). We are back on the ocean. We ended up at charming Casa Lula. We have a full casita with sunny patio, a kitchen, living room, bedroom, clothes washer. 60 euros! When we made the reservation we thought we were just renting a habitatión doble, double room. Housing choices have been interesting and varied on this Camino. I’m planning to do a blog post about that.

Hazelnut Mousse

Post by Wynette: We had this at lunch today with our menú del día. They usually just tell you what are the several things available for dessert so there’s no time to look something up if you haven’t heard of it. She said mousse de avellana. We asked what that meant but she didn’t know it in English or how to describe it. We decided to give it a try anyway. (How can you go wrong when it’s mousse anything?) It sure was good. While we were eating it we still weren’t sure what it was but hazelnut was one of our guesses. We knew some kind of nut. Later I asked her to spell it for us and then we had Google translate it. Sure enough. Hazelnut Mousse.

San Vicente de la Barquera to Unquera, Thursday, May 3

Post by Wynette: We walked 9.4 miles today. We thought we’d stop about 2 miles sooner but the two places to stay at that point were not open. We didn’t mind. We were feeling good after our day off yesterday so we kept on trucking. It was a beautiful walk even though it was all inland once we left San Vicente. Crazy weather. We woke up to a beautiful sunrise. Didn’t expect that since forecast was for cloudy (but no rain) all day. Then, shortly after we started walking it started raining. It rained for 2 or 3 hours. It wasn’t a downpour, but the hardest rain we’ve walked in. After a bit of that, you are glad to find a bar to warm up and dry out in. (Continue reading after photo.)

Finally the sun came out again. Here we are crossing under the big autopista (super highway).

Shrine

Post by Wynette: We have seen very few shrines on this trip. We saw this one today.

Hotel Luzon

Post by Wynette: One reason we decided to stay here an extra day is that we like our hotel. It is far from perfect: terrible wifi, few electrical outlets for charging all our devices, small room, thin walls (our neighbors were noisy a couple of hours last evening). It’s a slightly shabby, old-fashioned, once grand hotel. Big lobby, etc. Several guidebooks recommended it. Google reviews were mediocre. But we couldn’t find anything better. What we do like is the old-fashioned grandness, our bright sunny corner room with ocean views, comfortable beds, clean, location in the center of town.

Small getaway house

This place was a little mysterious. On a small road. A tiny house but with utilities. Well kept up. Great ocean views. Mowed yard. We decided it was a tiny vacation home.
